It has to be refined. Crude oil contains salt, metals, sediment, water, sulfur, acid, and is the wrong viscosity. All of these will destroy an engine.

Petroleum is a refined product from crude oil, which is pumped up from under the ground, where it formed 300 million years ago.
"Petroleum" is another name for what the rest of us call "oil" pumped out of the ground. The only difference is that when you call your oil "petroleum", you can get a better price for it.
Not really. Petroleum can be a lot of stuff that comes from black oil pumped out of the ground, while petrol is only the part(made from oil) that can be used to run cars and similar engines.

Crude oil
Not exactly. Petrol (called "gasoline" in the US) is made only from petroleum, the black crude oil which is pumped from the ground and is considered a fossil fuel. Maize (corn) can, however, be used to make ethanol, which automobiles can use to run quite effectively. Brazil is a nation which is converting its entire automobile fleet to use 100% ethanol as a fuel, although most of theirs is produced from sugarcane.
Crude oil
Oil is pumped from deep under the ground. It is a fossil fuel, made millions of years ago.
Whaling was once a major industry in New England. Whale oil in lamps was the main source of illumination in the dark. But, when petroleum oil began to be extracted pumped from the ground and refined into kerosene for lamps, the demand for whale oil plummeted.
Crude oil.
