Why can't people walk around naked?

Firstly, it would be pretty unhygienic. Imagine sitting on the bench at the food court after 12 other people had sat there that day with no clothes on. Your bare bottom where that many other bare bottoms had been. Some maybe clean.... Some maybe not so much... Not a good thought.

Brushing up against most strangers in an elevator would also usually be much less than pleasant.

It would also take away people's choice to be modest. If someone doesn't want to have areas of their body "checked out" they have the choice of somewhat hiding them under certain styles of clothing.

There are also certain natural things that your body does in some situations that are okay when you are the only one that knows, but without clothing, everyone would see. It would make things awkward for everyone in the room. Some things could cause some pretty major misunderstandings. Clothing gives you the freedom to have some privacy from physical reactions that you cannot always help.

People do walk around naked. It depends on where and when you live. Public nakedness, either as an all day thing or during swimming or bathing, is common in many parts of the world.

In European type societies there are naturalist camps where clothing is frowned on and nudist beaches.

Many people are unclothed in their own homes.

In Japan public bathing is common, in native communities in South America and Africa clothing is often optional.

Sports teams and gym changing areas often have common showers and dressing room. YMCAs used to allow only naked swimming.In northern climates and very hot sunny climates such as the Sahara desert clothing is usually worn as protection from the cold, sunlight and insects.
