Because once the flag is soiled it must be burned.
The US flag, never let it touch the ground.
In many cultures, to do anything with or to a flag other than fly it on a flag pole or fold it up propperly for storage is considered disrespectful. However, many articles of clothing have been made with a print of the United States Flag. Some have used the flag as a shaul or head covering, and these are traditionally acceptable in the context that it is being done out of respect and love for the Flag and what it stands for. Some things that you should never do to a United States Flag: Let the flag touch the ground Cut or tear the flag improperly fold the flag improperly store the flag. Discard the flag in a refuse bin or dump. Traditionally, if any of these things have occurred with your flag, the flag needs to be burned to prevent further disrespect to the flag.
Burning the U.S. flag is legal due to rulings by the Supreme Court of the United States. In 1968, Congress imposed criminal penalties for anyone who "knowingly casts contempt upon any flag of the United States by publicly mutilating, defacing, defiling, burning or trampling upon it." In 1989, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that anti-desecration statutes are unconstitutional if aimed at suppressing one type of expression in the case of Texas vs Johnson. In response to the ruling, Congress enacted The Flag protection Act of 1989, which imposed a fine and up to one year in prison for certain acts that violate the physical integrity of the flag, including mutilating, defacing, physically defiling, maintaining on the floor, or trampling on the flag. In 1990, in the case of United States v. Eichman, the Supreme Court struck down the Flag Protection Act, ruling that the government's interest in preserving the flag as a symbol does not outweigh the individual's First Amendment right to disparage that symbol through expressive conduct.
Most Australians are unaware that there is such a thing as "National Flag day", let alone celebrate it.Australian National Flag Day is on 3 September, our flag's "birthday". The day was officially proclaimed" to commemorate the day in 1901 on which the Australian National Flag was first flown".There are special flag raisings and events being held on "Flag Day", but most people simply do not celebrate it.The closest Australia would have to such a thing would be Australia Day, which occurs on 26 January every year. This is a patriotic day when people celebrate what it means to be Australian, so it bears little resemblance to "flag day".

People who raise and lower ANY national flag won't let it touch ground. Particularly so if they are servicemen of that country. This is an international sign of respect for the flag you serve under, not just American.
When waving the American flag, be careful not to let any part of it touch the ground, because this is offensive.
You can never let the flag touch the ground or it has to be burned. Secondly, do not spill any thing on the flag or will have to burn.
You cant let the flag touch the ground or that is disrespect of the United States Of America......Never cut or rip the flag....... Always keep the flag in the light, if it is outside in the dark at night that means that our country has fallen........All the other flags have to be lower than the American Flag
The flag is raised quickly and lowered slowly. Do not let the flag touch the ground. The American flag should be folded in a triangle with the stars visible between uses.
