They have an organ inside their ears that allows them to have excellent balance and to right themselves quickly in the event of a fall. A high fall allows them enough time to position themselves to land on their feet, with their back arched to cushion the impact (they need at least 1.8 seconds to properly right themselves). HOWEVER, they can and do hurt themselves in such falls as well. Few cats survive falls from greater than sixty feet.
