There are techniques for 'snipping' out particular strands of DNA that can be matched against similar strands (blood at a crime scene vs blood of several suspects, etc.). Although the strands serve the same genetic function they differ for different individuals in length. DNA is like a helical ladder and the snippet is like a small piece of one ladder. Each snippet contains different amounts of unnecessary code (rungs) which makes the lengths unique to an individual, especially when several snippets from each individual are compared. The length of the snippets determines the rate at which it is drawn through a gel under a voltage differential. The results lend themselves to statistical analysis showing that there is a very high or low probability that the set of snippets came from a particular individual. It is similar to the different numbers on two combination locks (combination of numbers). The entire genome has billions or rungs and it is impracticable and unnecessary to compare the entire genomes of the subjects.
