Basically, because there are two sexes. One gene allele is on one chromosome from dad and the other allele is on the chromosome from mom. If more than two alleles for a trait, only two can be represented in the genome of the organism.

Are alleles recessive?

Alleles can be either dominant or recessive. They can be identical or different for any given gene in a somatic cell, and can represent alternative forms of a gene.

Can genes be located in cheek cells?

Yes the gene would be found within the DNA in the cheek cell, however, the gene will only be expressed in the stomach and so the copy of the gene found in the cheek cell will not be functional

Does an entire chromosome code for only one gene?

You have about 20,000 to 25,000 genes in 23 chromosomes in human cell. So approximately 1000 genes are there in any single chromosome. The gene will be too big in size, if you have one single gene in any single chromosome.

How are the terms genes locus and allele?

1. A gene is a piece of DNA that provides a set of instructions to a cell to make a certain protein, a locus is a specific position on a pair of homologous chromosomes, and a allele is any of the alternative forms of a gene that may occur at a specific locus.

What are alleles and how are they inherited from parent cells?

Any of the alternative forms if a gene or other homologous DNA sequence
