You are NOT limited to only two partitions in Windows 98.

When you run FDISK, make a primary partition and then create an extended partition.

Depending on the size of your hard drive and the size of the partitions you would like to create (without exceeding the 127G barrier, BIOS dependent) you may create as many partitions within the extended partition as you would like.

After creating both the primary partition and the extended partitions you must reboot and then format each partition.

Keep in mind that for every partition letter, Windows will use 8K of memory.

You may want to edit your Config.sys file and change lastdrive=z to 2-3 letters beyond the drive letters assigned to your hard drive partitions, CD/ DVD drives and any flash drives or other removable storage you are using.

It is rare that you would need 26 drive letters, so save yourself some system resources, especially since Windows 98 (SE) is limited to 512MB.

Hope this helps.

Which utility is used to partition a new hard drive in windows98?

Fdisk. Windows 98 cd's are not bootable (for the most part) so in order to partition a new hard disk in preparation of a windows 98 install, you will need to make a boot floppy (or boot CD, or USB) which will enable you to partition and format the disk for windows install. Follow the link below for some disk images, utilities, and workarounds for the windows 98 bootdisk dilemma.

What is the proper way to reformat a hard drive?

Reformat the hard drive like you would any other drive. If you want to remove the partition table and create a new one, or it is a new drive, then boot your system using a win98 bootable disk then type Fdisk hit enter. Then do what you want in FDisk. Otherwise skip to the next step. If you are in DOS, just do Format and then the drive letter, such as: Format C: If you want to create it as a bootable drive, make sure the drive is marked as Active in Fdisk (or whatever partition manager you use) and then do Format /s C: The /s means to install the OS loader files. Or, if you install or reinstall Windows, you should be given the options to clear the drive and/or partition and format it.

How do you get a new hard drive to work?

A new hard drive generally comes without a valid partition table nor file system. Assuming you have the new hard drive cabled and configured correctly (using the jumper diagrams on the label), you then have to prepare it for a file system. The first thing you'd need to do is partition the new hard drive. Since Windows XP, Windows comes with both FDisk and a disk manager. You can use those. Once you install the partition table, you may need to format the partition(s) you created. If you use FDisk, you will certainly need to format as a separate step. FDisk is really only suitable for new drives or drives you want to completely erase, since it cannot change partition sizes once they are created without losing data.Or if you prefer, you can use a third-party partition manager. The modern partition managers can automatically do some of the necessary steps for you. So all you have to do is tell it you want a certain size partition or to use the entire space and it will make sure you have a valid partition table, that you have a FAT32 or NTFS file system, and have the correct type of partitions. One thing to keep in mind is that if you ever want to boot off of the new drive, the partition table type has to be set to Active. If the active flag is missing, any operating system that is installed on that drive will not boot. So if you can access the drive but not boot from it, then you likely forgot to configure the drive as Active. That is easy to fix and even FDisk can do that without any loss of data. Nearly every partition tool available has this option.

How do you partition a floppy disk?

First, make sure you have backed everything up and have nothing on the PC you don't want to lose. The FDISK command will overwrite the entire partition table and render everything on the hard drive useless. Then you start FDisk from the console mode, not within Windows, and then you delete the existing partitions if you don't want them, and then start over with partitions sized to what you want. Do keep in mind that for most cases, you should use a Windows-based partition editor such as EaseUS Partition Master. They are easier to use and lets you configure existing partitions without deleting partitions first.

How many partitions can there be on a hard drive?

As many as it can handle (how big it is). And adding partitions does not make more space. It's like putting a brick wall in the middle of a football field. :-P This is depend on your disk style, if your disk is MBR, you could only create four primary partitions or three primary partitions with one Extended partition (you could create many logical partition under extended partition) at most If your disk style is GPT, you could create as many as you can. here is an article about how to make partition from http://www.partition-magic-windows7.com/res/create-partition-windows7.html
