And make sure 192.168.00#.00# . if you use 168.192.00#.00# this will cause an administrator setting in your computer which conflicts with you servers programmed dominance. Placing 168 first is cool to use on small home/office networks cause you can see them but they can';t see you. :>)
Sorry but I think the question "What can you do to promote a server to DC if you're in a remote location with slow WAN link" is different.
There may be many scenario's wherein you have to build a DC remotely and connection speed is slow. It may take a very long time to build the DC. The solution for this is the new feature called New Domain Controller from Replica. Steps Involved are
Take a NTBackup from a DC
Put in a disk and ship it to the desired location
Restore to the prospective New DC
Decrease initial replication load

Once a server is enabled (which can be done on most computers if they have the requisite software) the computer waits for requests from remote computers (called clients), finds the requested files or data in its system, processes it if necessary, and then sends it to the remote computer.

Generally you want to set-up DNS on your server, then set-up an Active Directory. Active Directory wont work without DNS. Now go to your XP machine, right click 'My Computer'/properties/computer name/ then click on the 'change' button. Type in the name of your domain. It will ask for admin credentials, provide them. Now your part of the domain.. or in other words.. connected to a windows 2003 server.
