You can hear a 'phone interfering with electronic hardware when you put a mobile 'phone near a hifi or TV - when the 'phone rings or gets a text message, the audio circuits in the hifi or TV pick up the radio waves and a buzzing can be heard through the speakers. Same idea in the hospital, except that rather than a harmless buzz the radio waves could cause the equipment to give false readings, or put too much or too little drugs into the patient. However, the likelihood of problems ocurring is slight as all vital electronic equipment is supposed to be protected against interference, so not using mobile 'phones in hospitals is a "better safe than sorry" rule.
