Engineers need to communicate for many reasons. They need to understand what problem they are going to be solving. They need to test the solution, usually with a different team and communicate with them to make changes that arrise. Also they must communicate with the customer to make sure that a project is meeting deadlines, financial constraints and staying on track to the original specifications of the initial problem. When working on large projects, tasks are split amongst engineers and they but each component of the solution has to work in a relationship with all other parts of the project, teamwork and meetings are extremely important here. You can work on a brige support for a month, but if they change a conjoining part of the bridge and you didnt "get the email" you're back at square one, making everyone (except for the engineers that have completed their assigned duties and twiddle their thumbs and play fantasy football in their cubicles slowly nearing mid life crisises) while you scury like a maniac rushing a design through with management breathing down your neck. This is why communication is important to engineer.
