This was done in a few different translations, particularly the Living Bible. and the New Living Translation. All translations are interpretations, and these Bibles were translated by people who harbored strong feelings against gay people.

A person who believes The Bible is literally the word of God, owes it to himself/herself to learn and read it in its original language. Otherwise, they're never really reading the word of God.

Another Answer:

As Scripture has been translated into many different languages than is was written in, and as the original Hebrew/Aramaic is much more limited than the Greek or English, the meaning or intent of modern terms is an attempt to describe the events noted in Scripture. Let's consider that sexual immorality is not something new for just this generation. Yes, in biblical times, the terms homosexual and even sodomy (though the word stems from the account in Sodom noted in Genesis 19) does not occur in the Bible. This does not mean the 20th century terms used to describe the acts noted in both the Old and New Testaments (see Leviticus 18:22;20:13, Deuteronomy 23:17, Romans 1:24-32, and 1 Corinthians 6:9) are inaccurate in any way or a conscious 'manipulation' for whatever reasons.

The term 'abomination' is used to group these things that are wrong in God's eyes*. As He is the Creator and we His creation, it would be considered wise for us to know just what these entail. That is if one believes in the Bible as His word and desires to receive the promise of eternal life as members of His Family (see Revelation 21:27).

Some of the most notable abominations before God include:

Dishonesty (Proverbs 12:22).

Arrogant pride (Proverbs 16:5).

Ignoring God's law (Proverbs 28:9).

Devising evil and sowing discord (Proverbs 6:16-19).

Eating what the Bible calls "unclean" animals (Leviticus 11:8, 11, 13, 23).

The act of homosexuality (Leviticus 18:22; 20-13).

Jewish answer

regarding the answer above, the word "abomination" is a mistranslation of the Hebrew word to'evah (תואבה) which doesn't have an English word. It's most accurately translated as "inappropriate for a Jewish person." In modern language, a better word would be "unkosher." This is not a moral sin, but a religious sin. Conservative Christians have completely blown this word out of proportion, due to a translation error.

*This is not true. This is only how Christian theology interprets the text. It's not the original meaning.

Another answer:

The manipulation of God's Word is nothing new and has been going on since Satan first took God's name in vain in the beginning. He twisted it in the minds and hearts of the first two people... and he tried to twist and use it in his "temptation" of Christ, the One whose Words they are [Matt. & Luke 4].

He set a spiritual wedge between God and man from the beginning... creating an awareness of the selfish cravings of the flesh, setting them above the Loving Commandments of God. And so it shall continue until Christ returns to remove him [see Rev.20:1-3].

"For the cravings of the lower nature are just the opposite to those of the Spirit, and the cravings of the Spirit are just the opposite of those of the lower nature; these two are opposed to each other, so that you cannot do anything you please. But if you are guided by the Spirit, you are not subject to the law. Now the practices of the lower nature are clear enough: Sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity [hostility], quarreling, jealousy, anger, intrigues, dissensions, party-spirit, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and the like.

"I now warn you, as I have done before, that those who practice such things shall not be heirs of the Kingdom of God.

"But the product of the Spirit is Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, Self-control. There is no law against such things." (Gal.5:17-23 WNTWilliam's New Testament)

Until Christ returns, suffice it to say that, because Satan is the god of this world whom man chose to worship and obey from the beginning... expect the manipulation of God's Word to continue. And whatever God commands man to do in His Word, man will NOT do. And whatever God commands men not to do, man WILL do.

Is The Bible homophobic?

In spite of it's outward appearance, the Bible is not homophobic. Homosexuality was only identified very recently in the last century by Sigmund Freud, in Biblical days, it was naturally assumed that everybody was heterosexual. That is why it has taken so long for gays to gain acceptance, because they were only identified very recently, and in the Bible, homosexual actions were likened to crimes such as burglary, murder or rape. As a matter of fact, the Bible does not condemn homosexual actions as it is, the reason that many modern-day Christians believe otherwise is due to a series of gross misinterpretations of the Bible. Only seven verses in the Bible of around a million have anything to say about men lying with men, or women lying with women, while Jesus himself never said anything about gays, neither did St. Paul or any of the apostles.

What year did the word homosexual first appear in the Bible?

NOTE: This Question is not about what the Bible says about homosexuality, or about homosexuality itself. Please use the discussion tab to talk about those issues. The words "homosexual" and "homosexuality" first entered the English language in the 1860's and do not appear in most standard English Bible Translations. Furthermore, these words are absent from the original Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek texts. The authors of the Bible did not understand sexual orientation; this term was only developed in the late 19th century. The writers had no comprehension of same-sex relationships, or sex with persons of the same gender. Thus, when you see one of these terms in an English translation of the Bible, it is inaccurate. The word "homosexual" first appeared in an American Bible in 1973, the New International Version (NIV). It seems to have appeared in a version in the United Kingdom, the (NEB), a few years earlier.
