Best Answer

He took over the Persian Empire. His plan to takeover in western Europe was lost with his early death. He imagined the world ended in India and Spain, and thought he could conquer 'the world', not knowing about the other three-quarters.

Additional:

Part of what made Alexander "Great" was that he pushed beyond the boundaries of the then known world and In Plutarch's essay On the Tranquillity of Mind, The Moralia, Plutarch suggests that Alexander may have wondered if there were more: "Alexander wept when he heard Anaxarchus discourse about an infinite number of worlds, and when his friends inquired what ailed him, "Is it not worthy of tears," he said, "that, when the number of worlds is infinite, we have not yet become lords of a single one?"
