He was from outside of the group of people who had ruled the country from the
first movements of independence on. He was a son of poor immigrant parents with
almost no education and no connections with the ruling families.
Thus when he became a war hero, winning almost the only victory that the Americans
could rejoice in, from the War of 1812, he captured the hearts of the common people
who were also outside of the clique of the founding fathers. So, when the choice
of the electors began to be decided by, or at least strongly influenced by popular
vote, he benefited and rose to a position of power.
