Mostly because Australia has close ties political ties to the United States which have been further cemented during the Howard Government's term.
There is widespread debate at the present - 2007- over whether Australia should have become involved. Some people resent the dependence on another government while others recognize the historic and present day necessity to support a traditional ally.
