Why did the Danish navy destroy their own ships?
On August 29 1943 the Danish government, which had been working under protest since the German occupation in April 1940, stepped down (mainly because the Germans demanded the death penalty for saboteurs). To avoid that the navy's ships would be taken over by the Germans, the crews sank as many ships as possible and a few smaller units even managed escape to neutral Sweden. In total 32 ships were scuttled.
