During World War I, Belgium played a minor role as neutral victim, as combatant, and as minor member of the Triple Alliance. It was initially neutral until being invaded by Germany, at which point it became a formal combatant in the conflict. Although most of its territory was occupied by Germany throughout the war, its forces continued fighting on the side of the Triple Alliance until the war was won in 1918.
