Benjamin Franklin invented the Franklin Stove because he wanted to improve heating systems during this time period. The fireplaces before this wre very poorly designed and only heated a small part of an area. He did not put a patent on thisite because he wanted to give other inventors a chance to invent things. Also, people probably did not have the money for this stove/fireplace so he didn't chrge them any money at all for this item.

Fireplaces were the primary source of heat in colonial America, but they were inefficient because so much of the heat rose through the chimney and exited the house to no purpose. Franklin created the Franklin stove in order to heat rooms more effectively and efficiently.

The Franklin "stove" is actually a metal fireplace liner that contained a hollow "baffle", a wide, thin iron box near (but not at) the rear. The baffle was open at the bottom and contained two holes on the sides. Heat from the fire rose on both the back and front of the baffle, so that air entering at the bottom of the box was more quickly heated. Heated air rises, but since there was no escape through a chimney in the Franklin stove, the heated air exited into the room through the holes in the baffle's sides.

He made them because he could and he had an idea. Even as a young man he would invent things. One story tells about him getting an idea to make a ski type of shoe so he could go across a pond he lived near. He was about 10-12 years old when he came up with this idea. He made them and they worked, but when he tried them out he got across, but his clothing was on the other shore. He would see a need for things and invent something to fit the need. The Franklin stove is a good example of that and so was the lightening rod. Many fires were caused by lightening 200 years ago and it was really dangerous because once a fire started it could burn a whole village very fast. He came up with the lightening rod and it saved peoples homes/lives.
