Britain did not join Canadian Confederation but they did allow it by passing the BNA act of 1867. Britain's North American possessions were increasingly under threat from the USA and at the same time Canada and other colonies were not supplying the mother country with enough money to make their defense worthwhile. As a result the request for Confederation was met with, to paraphrase, "Don't let the door hit you on the way out."

To quote Joseph Howe "...having made up their minds that the Provinces are a source of peril and expense to them, the prevailing idea is to set them adrift to gradually withdraw British troops from them , to have no quarrel with the United States on account of them and to leave them to defend themselves if they can or to pass in to the union if they prefer. Why did yukon territory join confederation?

They were acquired in a deal from Britain. They were given no choice in the matter so in that sense did not "join". Seeing how Canada and Britain represented their interest in the Alaska Border dispute it is likely they would not have joined given a choice but of course we will never know.
