Ever since the French and Indian war, britain was in massive debt. They realized their imperial federalistic policy toward the colonies would no longer work, so they imposed a more controlling one to make more profit from the colonies. New taxes such as the stamp and sugar acts would force colonists to pay taxes and help lessen Britains crushing debt.
