Why did Cleopatra chose to get killed by a poison snake and not a other thing?

History claims she did, she held an asp ( a small viper ) to her breast, and commited suicide. Octavian was planning on making her his personal slave to be ridiculed, and she was too proud to live like that. She had tried to starve herself, but Octavian said he would kill her children if she did this. However, when it actually came down to it, she knew she had to die. She had her servants sneak an asp into a fruit basket and then had them bring it to her. Snakebites, in the Egyptian religion, were thought to make you immortal. Thus, even in her demise, Cleopatra came out on top once again.

∙ 13y agoNo, that story of Cleopatra dying by snakebite is pure fantasy. It's a myth that grew up around her death and a pretty far out one at that. The ancient writers state that it is not known how Cleo died, but they think it was some type of poison. Very recently, a researcher from the University of Trier, concluded a study of Cleo's death and said her death was caused by a mixture of drugs, a drug cocktail, so to speak. The results point to a mixture of opium, wolfsbane and hemlock. However the only way to know for certain is to find her body and run forensic tests.

∙ 13y agoCleopatra never let a snake bite her. That is just a myth. Christoph Schafer, a professor at the University of Trier, has done extensive research on poisons of the type that would have been available to Cleopatra and his findings are that she died of a "poison cocktail" of three different drugs.
