The easiest way to get to the East Indies was to follow the great circle from South Africa across the Indian Ocean and then the circle north to Java, also using the Roaring Forties winds around the 40th degree lattitude to expedite their travel. Hartog pioneered this, running into western Australia and turning north, and so becoming in the process the early Dutch explorer of the Australian west coast.
