At heart, Poe was a bit of a practical joker who enjoyed teasing and tricking people. One of his favorites was to claim to be a direct descendant of the American traitor Benedict Arnold. He did this by citing his mother's birth name Elizabeth Arnold. There is no relation between Benedict Arnold and Poe's mother's family.
Poe also wrote a piece called "Astounding News by Express" in the newspaper The New York Sun on April 14, 1844 announcing the crossing of the Atlantic Ocean by balloon. The entire story was a complete fabrication and fooled many people. The story is now counted among his short stories under the title "The Balloon Hoax."
