The events that led to FARC's formation were many decades in the making. In 1898, Colombia was officially a democracy, but the system of governance resembled a Dictatorship. The government ruthlessly controlled the population and suppressed the lower classes with taxes and violence.1 Corruption was rampant, and state officials retained power by seizing farmland from rural peasants and distributing it to wealthy patrons.2 These class discrepancies festered for decades and led to civil was in 1948. This civil war pitted the liberal, poor population against conservative, rich communities.3 Rather than defend the rural populations, government forces withdrew to Colombia's urban settlements, leaving rural communities defenseless. For rural populations banded together to form self-defense communities.4 The civil war ended in 1954, but the government never reestablished its presence in rural Colombia. Instead, these self-defense communities continued controlling central Colombia, advocating Communism and land reform through legal means. In response, the Colombian Government invaded central Colombia in 1955, determined to disband the communities. Seeing that it would be impossible to advance Communism and land reform through legal means, the communities declared an armed rebellion. From these, FARC emerged in 1965, determined to create a national revolution.5

FARC's ideology was a direct response to the class inequalities, insecurity, and corrupt democracy practiced by the Colombian Government. To rectify these injustices, FARC called for a revolution to replace Colombia's democratic government with a Marxist system. Additionally, FARC demanded extensive and reform for the poor and security for rural communities. These three goals, a Marxist system, land reform, and rural security became the ideological foundation of FARC's revolutionary movement.6 In essence, FARC emerged to change the system of government and improve living conditions for Colombia's poor.

Is farc a terrorist organization?

Yes FARC is a terrorist organnization. It attacks the country of Colombia. It is the oldest rebell aliance in the world that still works. The UN, USA, and Colombia have fought against it. The people of Colombia always march, sing, pray, argue, and fight for the captured civilians, political people, and military personnel. The FARC live in the Amazon rain forest, especially in the side of Venezuela. The Venezuelian president considers them as brothers, while the people do not think that way but are forced to do so. Venezuela, Nicaragua and Ecuador have, and may still be helping them. Hugo Chavez is the FARC's greates ally, and 3rd greatest enemy of Colombia, next to the FARC and the mafia. Like the Colombian mafia, the FARC makes alot of its money from narco-trafficing (may be spelled wrong) cocaine and marijuana. Because of the FARC, Colombia is still a poor country, it gives the country a bad reputation. A lot of the world's population knows Colombia only by cocaine, and think's that it is the country's largest export. It is not, Roses, Flowers, and mechanics are the largest export. In the last decade the FARC have lost many battles and their troops. The Colombian president, Alvaro Uribe, has dedicated most of his presidency to ending the FARC. Colombia loves this president, jest like the U.S. loves Lincoln, Obama, Washington, and Benjamin Franklin. The FARC have lost most of it's troops by surrender, the surrendering troops are interviewed and then given a new life to raise a family and have an honest job. The FARC have become even more peaceful, they have stopped kidnapping, and have released a lot of the kidnapped troops. The US is Colombia's most powerful allie, it has helped with technology and to train troops, even though American troops get easily sick in the jungle, since they are more trained for the desert. Colombia is at a strategic place because of its position. It is very fertile, most of the land has a tropical climate to grow good food, and the cold parts grow food that well grows in the cold. It is also the opening to central America. As well as having coasts to both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. It is also the best connection between Nicaragua, Venzuela, and Ecuador, who do not like the US. Without Colombia the whole south American continent would go against the US. I am sorry that I got out of topic but that is what I know, and yes I am a proud Colombian.
