Napoleon didn't particularly want the hassle of trying to maintain/rebuild the French Empire in the New World; he was pretty busy in Europe anyway and had just lost Haiti. He also saw it as a way to stick it to England by helping the United States become a formidable naval power. Also, part of the territory was claimed by Spain as well; selling it to the US allowed Napoleon to say "you guys work it out amongst yourselves, I'm not involved."
Well, there are actually two reasons:
1. Napoleon needed money for military supplies
2. Napoleon hoped it will create a rival fro the British
to cement relations with the us
