Gandhi coined the term Harijans (children of God) for the Dalits and the Depressed Classes. However, most dalits were against the use of this term. Narendra Jadhav, notable Dalit economist, once commented, "If we are the children of God, who are the others? Those of the Devil?"
By popularizing the word, Harijan, which means the people of God, Gandhi. He considered untouchability a blight on the Hindu world. Based on the philosophy that all human beings are equal and Harijans along with everyone else had a right to enjoy society.
