Unfortunately, Garfield was assassinated by a disgruntled former federal employee named Charles Guiteau (actually, the president was shot and gravely wounded in early July 1881; he died from an infection and a heart attack, caused by his wounds, in mid-September). Guiteau was later tried, convicted, and sentenced to death; he was subsequently executed.

Garfield served as the President of the United States for only one year because he was assassinated in 1881. He was shot by Charles J. Guiteau and eventually died from infection caused by the bullet wounds.
