Germany started it's colonization of Africa pretty late in the Europe-wide "scramble for Africa" (to use a contemporary term). But German colonialism was swift and brutal. Yes, Prussia (how Germany was called from 1871-1918) eventually benefited economically, but the overall investment was a loss. The same reasons apply for most countries. they colonized Africa to have control of the natural resources, such as copper and gems.
