How did the success of the Italian Campaign help secure victory on D-day?

I don't think it did. The purpose of the Italian Campaign up to June 1944, was to keep the Germans tied down in one area so they could not send more troops to Russia. When the Allies leaders met, the Russians demanded that the US and British engage the Germans in order to draw more men away from Russia. I don't believe the Italian Campaign caused the Germans to give up men from the Normandy defense. The operation that landed troops in southern France helped to relieve pressure off of the Normandy front. These troops did come from Italy so it might be true that the Italian Campaign helped secure success in Normandy.
