some people believe it was a punishment (Jews believe that god notices our bad behavior even if we don't) most people believe that because the Holocaust set the need for a Jewish state in Israel which is a wonderful thing... you never know what amazing things happen in light of tragety, its unfortunate that sometimes it takes things like that to improve things
