There are two possible reasons for David having been anointed as the future king of Israel:
David was anointed by God as a sign that he was blessed and set apart for a particular task. The house of Saul had the kingdom taken from them because Saul was not obedient to God and was rebellious and stubborn, hence David was chosen as the anointed one over the natural successor.
After Saul was found to be less than perfectly fit as king (1 Samuel 13:14 and 15:11), God told Samuel to anoint David as king (1 Samuel ch.16). The reason why David was chosen was that David was perfect in his love of God and his obedience to Him.Other than a single trespass (for which he fully repented), David fulfilled God's will every day of his life (1 Kings 15:5).

It was God who commanded that David be anointed at that time (1 Samuel ch.16), since Saul had been lacking in fulfilling one of God's commands (1 Samuel ch.15). Saul had spared the Amalekite King Agag in battle, against God's instructions through the prophet Samuel (ibid). See also:
David was physical powerful, incredibly popular, and had the support of God himself.
God was angry with Saul and had rejected him as king, and chose little David as a king instead.
As God rejected king saul, then God told Samuel to choose one of Jesse son David as the new king.
Samuel anoint David with oil so the spirit of the Lord rushed upon him
King Saul proved unfaithful to Jehovah and unworthy to rule over His people. So God rejected him and directed the prophet Samuel to anoint David as the future king of Israel.
Twice once as a boy and then as a king. David was anointed 3 times. In 1 Samuel 16:13 by Jesse. In 2 Samuel 2:4, by the men of Judas as king over the house of Judah; and in 2 Samuel 5:3, as King of Israel.
David was anointed 3 times. We don't know the age of David at his first anointing, but he did not become king at that time ( I Samuel 16:1-13). David was anointed king of Judah at age 33, about 1004 B.C. (II Samuel 2:4) and king over all Israel at age 40, about 997 B.C. (II Samuel 5:2) and reigned until 965 B.C.

A:According to 1 Samuel 10:1, Samuel anointed Saul. Then, in 1 Samuel 16:13, Samuel anointed the young boy David as the future king. In 2 Samuel 2:4, the men of Judah anointed David king of Judah and in 2 Samuel 5:3, the elders of Israel anointed David king of Israel. Chronicles does not mention any anointing of Saul, but says that the elders of Israel anointed David.
David was anointed as a future kiing when he was a young shepherd ( 1 Sam. 16:11-13), perhaps 12-15 years old. H was anointed as King of Israel when he was thirty years old. (2 Sam. 5:3) This means that it was at least 15 years before he became king of Israel.
David was anointed as king over Judah in 1077 BCE, when he was 30 years old. Ishbosheth(Saul's son) ruled over the other tribes for about two years, but was assassinated(2Samuel 2:1-4, 8-10; 4:5-12) and his tribes then joined Judah, and made David king over all Israel.(2Samuel 5:1-3; 1Chronicles 11:1-3; 12:23-40). Between Hebron and Jerusalem, David ruled for over 40 years. (2Samuel 5:4-10; 1Chronicles 11:4-9; 2Cronicles 6:6)

David had been anointed to be the next king of Israel because Saul had selfishly turned away from God. Because Saul no longer had God's approval and spirit, his personality traits became more and more wicked. He tended toward jealousy and anger (1 Samuel 18:8+9) and as David grew closer and closer to God, Saul became very afraid of faithful David. (1 Samuel 18:12, 28+29)
