There are two possible reasons for David having been anointed as the future king of Israel:

  1. In 1 Samuel, God was angry with King Saul for disobeying Samuel's instructions to utterly destroy the Amaleks and all their animals, so David was chosen and then anointed by Samuel to replace Saul as king.
  2. The Book of Chronicles contains no mention of why God anointed David and only mentions that the elders of Israel (not Samuel) joined in anointing David king by acclamation, in gratitude for his leadership under Saul.

David was anointed by God as a sign that he was blessed and set apart for a particular task. The house of Saul had the kingdom taken from them because Saul was not obedient to God and was rebellious and stubborn, hence David was chosen as the anointed one over the natural successor.

After Saul was found to be less than perfectly fit as king (1 Samuel 13:14 and 15:11), God told Samuel to anoint David as king (1 Samuel ch.16). The reason why David was chosen was that David was perfect in his love of God and his obedience to Him.Other than a single trespass (for which he fully repented), David fulfilled God's will every day of his life (1 Kings 15:5).

It was God who commanded that David be anointed at that time (1 Samuel ch.16), since Saul had been lacking in fulfilling one of God's commands (1 Samuel ch.15). Saul had spared the Amalekite King Agag in battle, against God's instructions through the prophet Samuel (ibid). See also:

King Saul proved unfaithful to Jehovah and unworthy to rule over His people. So God rejected him and directed the prophet Samuel to anoint David as the future king of Israel.

Why did David spare Saul's life?

David had been anointed to be the next king of Israel because Saul had selfishly turned away from God. Because Saul no longer had God's approval and spirit, his personality traits became more and more wicked. He tended toward jealousy and anger (1 Samuel 18:8+9) and as David grew closer and closer to God, Saul became very afraid of faithful David. (1 Samuel 18:12, 28+29)
