Because he was disillusioned with his fourth wife, the German-born Anne of Cleves. Henry VIII's Chancellor, Thomas Cromwell, urged the King to marry Anne, but she lacked the intellect and cultural sophistication that the King preferred in women, being a docile, gentle but somewhat dull subordinate 'little woman'. They were married for only 7 months, the union was never consummated, and Anne was never even crowned Queen Consort. They divorced on 9th July 1540, to the mutual relief of both parties.

Catherine Howard, meanwhile, had been found a place as one of Anne's ladies-in-waiting by her uncle, the Duke of Norfolk. Attractive, clearly intelligent and well-educated, she soon caught the King's eye and he began courting her before he was even divorced from Anne. Already blessed with one son by his third wife Jane Seymour, Henry dreamed of fathering yet more male heirs to the English throne once Catherine Howard was his Queen.

But it was not to be. The Royal couple had no children of either gender, and only two years after their marriage, Catherine was charged with treason after allegedly having an affair with her personal secretary Francis Dereham, a charge which carried the death penalty (adultery on the part of the consort of a reigning sovereign was a treasonable offence in those days). She was beheaded on 13th February 1542, and lies buried in an unmarked grave in the grounds of St. Peter ad Vincula, the official chapel of the Tower of London- King Henry didn't even bother to attend her funeral.

(Francis Dereham, needless to say, was also executed, after first being tortured in the Tower).
