she was really ugly but Henry had only ever seen a painting of her and thought she was beautiful so when she arrived from Germany for the wedding he was repulsed and got out of it by marrying someone else and divorcing her, saying the marriage (which lasted a week) was not valid as it was never consummated.

Anne of Cleves was a German princess and as Germany is far away from England and took a long time to reach for Tudor people, henry VIII had hans hoblein the younger ( the court painter ) go and paint a picture of her so he could see what she looked like and deside whether to marry her or not. Henry liked the look of the painting and so agreed to marry her. When Anne came to England Henry really didnt like her - he thought she was ugly - calling her 'the flanders mare', despite her beauty being renowned throughout Europe. Henry couldnt stop the wedding and married her. Eventually, Henry manadged to get a divorce a few months after the wedding and to keep the allience with Germany he had her made his sister and showered her with many gifts.

He didn't.

He had her executed, because she had failed to produce a male heir, and unofficially because she gossiped about his shortcomings as a husband.
