Easter Rebellion
Easter Rebellion
The Irish fought against British rule in the Kingdom of Ireland.
The postponing of home rule caused the Easter Rising because it created dissatisfaction and frustration among Irish nationalists who had been advocating for self-government. The delay of home rule, coupled with growing tensions due to World War I and the perceived mistreatment of Irish citizens by the British government, led to a radicalization of some nationalists who believed that more drastic actions were necessary to achieve independence. The Easter Rising was seen as a direct challenge to British rule and an attempt to establish an independent Irish Republic.
The great potato famine.
Northern Ireland at the time of the Anglo-Irish Treaty (1921) was home to more unionists (those who wished to remain apart of the UK) than nationalists (those who sought freedom and independence from the British Empire). While the Irish negotiators of the Treaty sought to make Ireland completely independent, the six counties (Derry, Down, Tyrone, Antrim, Armagh and Fermanagh) with the highest ratio of unionists to nationalists were surrendered to British rule in a compromise to give the remaining 28 counties a dominion status, and later, republic status.
main difference is identity/allegiance/culture etc/ -- nationalists see themselves as Irish, overwhelmingly catholic, Gaelic in culture and aspiring to a united Ireland. unionists see themselves as british, giving allegiance to the queen, remaining part of the UK etc. also the issue of what areas "belong" to each side is very contentious. as populations change and shift even an area as small as a street can be contested between both sides.
Nationalists
The most important cost of British rule over India was the economic toll that it took on the country. India spent the wealth during the revolution leaving the country poor.
To call attention to the plight of the Irish under British rule.
