The Japanese became involved in World War II because they wanted more land in the Pacific, such as Indochina. With the U.S. giving them supplies to fuel the war itself, the U.S. decided to stop exports and Japanese assets. This lead to a Japanese plan of a three-wave invasion of the U.S.'s navy - the plan being to cripple it long enough so that they could take what they wanted in the Pacific and set up defense for it in time that the Americans would give up due to the Japanese overthrowing them with a defensive power. This was known as Pearl Harbor. (which, near-everyone knows of due to war-popularity) Pearl Harbor took place on December 7, 1941.

When and where did japan first become involved in world war 2 long before they attacked pearl harbor?

There is no good answer to this; World War Two is widely considered to have begun in 1939, but the Japanese had been at war for much longer than that. For Japan, World War Two was an extension of their ongoing conflicts in Korea and China. Japan first occupied Korea in the early 1910's, and the beginning of the Second Sino-Japanese War kicked off with the Mukden Incident in September of 1931. From there, the war would eventually merge into the greater conflict of World War Two.
