The name Jesus means 'Lamb of God". Jesus was to be the sacrificial lamb for the final sacrice. His blood would enable Christians to be forgiven for our sins without sacrificing an animal. The angel told Mary that she will conceive a Son, and shall call His name Jesus (Luke 1:30-31). This name was chosen because Jesus is the Anointed One and the Messiah. In LK 1:31 the angel Gabriel tells Mary to name the child "Jesus", but scripture gives no meaning to the name. In Mt there is no "annunciation" but (18) "she was found with child through the power of the Holy Spirit. (20) "suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream and said to him: "Joseph. . . (21) you are to name Him Jesus because He will save His peoplefrom their sins." The name Jesus, Greek transliteration of the Aramaic Yeshua [God saves] Mt 2:23: [quoting Isaiah] "and they shall call him Emanuel, a name which means "God is with us." Although Jesus was not an uncommon name in the day and time, it is the name the angel told them to name this Holy Child.
Many people in The Bible times had two names (Peter/Simon, Jacob/Israel etc) and their names often meant something (like today's Michael Jackson means 'Michael, son of Jack!)
Jesus was given two names - "Jesus" which means, in Hebrew, 'He who saves' and the one we normally know him by, and "Emmanuel" meaning 'God with us'. very appropriate names considering who he was! The word 'Christ' was not a name. it was a title bestowed on him by his followers. It is another word for 'Messiah' - a deliverer.
Actually the name "Jesus" is the anglicized version of His name in Latin, which is "Iesus".
For what it is worth, the Hebrew version of "Jesus" is "Yeshua" which is anglicized as "Joshua".
