No one really knows for sure but the common thought is that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. The Warren Commission investigated the assassination and this was their determination. Through the years many people have had alternate theories ranging from organized crime to unions and a possible retaliation for his brother, Robert Kennedy's (Attorney General) role in combating organized crime.

US President John F. Kennedy was shot because his administration was cracking down on, putting the screws to, and in general trying to stop the Mafia. This made him very unpopular with a very powerful foe and enemy, one that worked outside the law. The Mafia had helped JFK get elected in Chicago, and now JFK was trying to put them out of business. The assassination was a Mafia hit. Lee Harvey Oswald was a patsy. One of the real assassins has confessed, his name was James Sutton (now known as James Files).

Historians can only guess what was on the mind of Oswald when he shot JFK since he was also killed soon after his capture. There are various theories, but we will never really know what Oswald was thinking.

JFK was shot by Lee Harvey Oswald because Oswald wanted to be well known and all his other attempts had failed so he got a crazy idea and decided to shoot Kennedy dead.
