Ultimately, he single-handedly preached repentance to the entire city of Nineva. At first, he was completely reluctant with completing this assignment from God. So much so, that he headed the other direction (out to sea). Through a series of events, which culminated with a very large fish ride, he ended up back on the coast and walked through the town of Nineva preaching. There were many nuggets of truths that he uncovered during this main event and even a few more after it, but basically, that is what he did.

Jonah hated the people of Nineveh, the Assyrians, and did not want to obey and preach to them. These people were noted for their cruelty to those people who they conquered, and even though they thus needed to repent and change their behavior, Jonah did not want them to do so. He wanted them to be destroyed. He was afraid that if he preached God's message they would repent and so be saved, since he knew God to be merciful. Jonah disobeyed because his dislike of the Assyrians was so great that he wanted them to be punished rather than to have the opportunity to repent as God wanted them to through his preaching.

The reason for Jonah's disobedience was he knew all about Niniva and there evil ways. He knew How mean they were to each other and people who came to the city. He told God he must be mistaken cause those People (meaning Niniva) didn't deserve a second chance!

Jonah obeyed God's command to go to Nineveh, the capital city of Assyria, and preach to the people that their city would be destroyed in forty days unless they repented of their evil ways and followed God's commandments.

Jonah was commanded to go and preach to the people of Nineveh. Because they were wicked, Jonah tried to run away and disobey. However, he was swallowed up by a great fish, was humbled, and returned to obey the Lord by preaching to the people.

God called upon Jonah to tell the people of Nineveh that their city would be overthrown because of their wickedness.According to tradition, this was to provide an object-lesson to the Israelite Ten Tribes (since God knew that the Ninevites would repent and be spared). This is also the reason that Jonah didn't wan't this mission. It wasn't because of hatred. Rather, he knew that the lesson would be ignored by the Ten Tribes and that because of that, their conquest by Assyria would soon follow.

What was Jonah's dilemma in the Bible story of Jonah and the big fish?

Jonah had a few dilemas...Jonah was God's prophet when God asked him to go to the city of Nineveh. The people in that city were very wicked and God asked Jonah to warn them that if they didn't change, they'd be destroyed.First Dilema: Jonah did not want to go because the people in Nineveh had such a brutal reputation, so fearfully he got on a boat going in the opposite direction. Now, because Jonah was afraid, and did not obey God's command, God caused a big storm to hit the boat Jonah was on, nearly sinking it. (Jonah 1:1-3)Second Dilema: The sailors were afraid, so Jonah made the decision to jump into the ocean so the boat would not be destroyed. (Jonah 1:4-16)When he did, he was swallowed by a big fish, which brought him to Nineveh. (Jonah 1:17-2:10) Once at Nineveh, Jonah preached to the town and gave them warning, and to his surprise, they LISTENED. (Jonah 3:1-4:5)Third Dilema: Jonah was upset because, though he had preached their distruction, and in his opinion they deserved to die for their wickedness, God chose to forgive them. God used the bottle gord tree as an illustration and Jonah had to adjust his attitude.(Jonah 4:5-11)
