Fredrick Douglass told Lincoln that he wanted blacks to fight in the war, so after a few months or so, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Prolocomation to let blacks fight in the war.
He also did it to improve the morale of his soldiers, they were losing badly and began to lose hope. He wanted to give them something more to fight for they felt strongly about

∙ 7y agoWhen Abraham Lincoln pronounced the Emancipation Proclamation, he officially made abolition of slavery one of the Union's goals in the war. The reason he did this was mainly political.
By giving the Union the goal of abolishing slavery, he was identifying the South as seeking to preserve slavery- which was true, as seen in the Confederate Constitution, as well as other writings and speeches from Southern politicians of the time. Why does this matter?
Great Britain and France are why it mattered.These two countries were by far the most powerful in the world, and it wasn't even close. Remember, this was the era before the US was the superpower it is today. Both Britain and France, for varying reasons, didn't particularly like (but didn't necessarily hate) the United States; so they both leaned towards helping the South gain and keep its independence, if for no other reason than to weaken the US. If they had aided the Confederacy, it would've been disastrous for the Union, because it wasn't strong enough to fight the Confederacy and these European superpowers at the same time.
However, both Britain and France had already abolished slavery before the Civil War started. So when Lincoln issued the Proclamation, and made abolition the Union's war goal, it made it impossible for those two countries to support the South. If they supported the South, they would also be supporting slavery- and this would have been extremely unpopular among their own people. Neither country gave significant support to the South, and the South was forced to fight the rest of the war alone.
