Because they learned from their mistakes: when they allowed American settlers into what is known today as Texas, the American settlers eventually revolted and joined the United States, thus resulting in the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848. When Mexico lost that war, the territories of California, Texas, Nevada and Utah as well as parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, Wyoming and Colorado were also lost.
