In Sunni Islam, depiction of a human or animal form is considered a sin. The sin is to try and mimic God and/or usurp His position of power. As a result, most Islamic paintings and carvings lack living animals or people. However, since this was not widespread in Shiite areas or in India prior to the 20th century, we still have numerous paintings with living subjects coming from Muslims in those regions.
