Napoleon decided to leave Egypt for two reasons:
1 - He realized that, due to the lack of supplies and reinforcements, his army was doomed, soon or later, to collapse and surrender.
2 - The bad news he received about the military situation in being in Europe, particularly those related to the virtual loss of the whole Italy and the incompetence of the Directory to face the quagmire, convinced himself to get back to France , without giving any advice, that is abandoning his army.
