Napoleon tried to conquer Egypt to conquer turkey and India. If France controlled India, than England, an enemy of France, would lose a large sum of money and England would be easier to conquer.

Napoleon decided to leave Egypt for two reasons:

1 - He realized that, due to the lack of supplies and reinforcements, his army was doomed, soon or later, to collapse and surrender.

2 - The bad news he received about the military situation in being in Europe, particularly those related to the virtual loss of the whole Italy and the incompetence of the Directory to face the quagmire, convinced himself to get back to France , without giving any advice, that is abandoning his army.

He was accompanied by a selected group of generals, officers, scientist and 200 men of the Guides Corps and, on August 22, 1799 left Egypt on board of two frigates.
