The synoptic Gospels say that Jesus was arrested and brought to Pontius Pilate because of his attack on the moneychangers. On the other hand, the Gospel of John says that the attack on the moneychangers was his first public act; Jesus was arrested because he raised Lazarus from the dead, causing the priests and Pharisees to fear that people would begin to follow him rather than them.

Jesus was brought before the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate, for trial. The charge presented to Pilate was that Jesus called himself "King of the Jews". Pontius Pilate said that he could find no fault with Jesus.

There are two reasons why Pilate sentenced Jesus to death. One is religious or spiritual and the other is practical or realistic. In the spiritual/religious sense, Pilate was acting according to God's plan. Without the death sentence there would have been no redemption. Jesus would not have been able to fulfill his mission. Therefore Pilate was a key element in God's plan. (This is a simplistic, religious explanation, in order to answer the question, not a theology of any Christian sect) The second, or more practical reason was the Jewish leaders forced Pilate's hand. It was the time of the Jewish holy days and the city of Jerusalem was crowded with pilgrims coming to the temple. There had been riots and civil unrest in previous years, so Pilate was ordered by his boss, the governor of Syria, to take some troops, go to Jerusalem and Keep the peace -- no matter what. There is a misconception about Pilate's authority. He was not the governor. Pontius Pilate was, at the time we are concerned with, a procurator, which is an assistant to a governor. In Pilate's case, he was under orders from the governor of Syria. According to the New Testament, the Jewish priests took this opportunity to prosecute Jesus and they began to stir up the crowd. Pilate did all he could to get Jesus off, but because the crowd was getting ugly, he "washed his hands" of the whole thing and signed the death order, figuring it was one man's life to prevent a riot that could possibly kill or injure hundreds, not to mention the trouble he would be in with his boss in Syria.

Why Jesus was trialed for treason against the Romans?

Jesus was tried on trumped charges of treason because the ruling sect of the Jews wanted him dead, as they perceived him as a threat to their beliefs. This was their charge of blasphemy, but it was not a capital offense under Roman law. Therefore they had to convince the Romans that Jesus was going to set himself up as a king. Pilate saw through this rouse, but his hands were tied due to the political situation. He tried to get Jesus off, but failed. The sign that Pilate ordered put up on Jesus' cross, INRI, (Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews) was not an explanation of the charges, but of a way of Pilate getting revenge on the Jewish leaders who forced his hand.

The above is absolutely true, but just to clarify something for you... There was a King involved in the trial of Jesus (King Herod Antipas), but he didn't order the crucifixion. He merely turned Jesus back to Pontius Pilate, saying the responsibility lay with the Roman state.
