It was ordered by God in the Quran:
"The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for mankind, and clear proofs of the guidance, and the Criterion (of right and wrong). And whosoever of you is present, let him fast the month, and whosoever of you is sick or on a journey, (let him fast the same) number of other days. Allah desireth for you ease; He desireth not hardship for you; and (He desireth) that ye should complete the period, and that ye should magnify Allah for having guided you, and that peradventure ye may be thankful." ~Quran, 2:185
Because Muslims believe that Allah(name of God in Islam) will be happy if his creation (that means human being ) deprive themselves from food and drink for acertain period as ordered by Allah.
Moreover they will be able to feel the pain of hunger and will be more helpful to poor people
Prophet muhmmed swah started Ramadhan fast by the orders of Allah. Even in Quran Allah says that he has made fast mandatory for us like he made it for previous people. So fast was mandatory for Jews and christians too.
Ramadan was created so that the Muslims could build a closer relationship with God.
Historically, Ramadan comes "from the strict Lenten discipline of the Syrian churches." It has been an ancient tradition observed by Middle East people for religious purposes.
