It is not clear that Robert Indiana (real name: Robert Clark) was the main reason Barack Obama was elected in 2008, but certainly, the support artists like Mr. Indiana gave him helped considerably. As for why Indiana decided to donate some of his art to Mr. Obama's campaign (a pop art sculpture using the words HOPE), the artist had previously addressed similar themes of hope and change in his own artistic creations. There is some evidence that he became familiar with Barack Obama when both lived in Chicago, but they do not seem to have been close friends. Mr. Indiana has stated in interviews that he was attracted to the Obama presidential campaign largely as a result of what he saw its positive message, and that is why he decided to lend a hand.
