What were the reasons that Desert Storm started the Gulf War?

This answer has underlying supposition that is inaccurate, namely that the Gulf War did not begin until Operation Desert Storm took place. This is incorrect. The Gulf War of 1991 began when Saddam Hussein order the invasion of Kuwait two months earlier. Operation Desert Storm was the United Nations repellent attack against Saddam Hussein to force him back into Iraq.

Who were the bad guys in war with Iraq?

Wars don't have 'bad guys' necessarily, excluding Genocide. The war was fought between a United States led Multi-National Force and Saddam Hussein's Iraqi regime. After the Iraqi Regime was replaced with a new Iraqi Government, that government allied with the Multi-National Force to eliminate paramilitary groups intent on removing the new government and expelling American forces.

Why didn't the US take Saddam out of power at desert storm?

First, that wasn't the mission. The UN only sanctioned a mission to dislodge Iraqi forces from Kuwait, not charging onto Baghdad and overthrow Saddam Hussein from power. The mission was a success and once the routed Iraqi forces crossed back to the Iraqi border from Kuwait after being expelled by U.S. and UN forces in February 1991, the mission was declared complete and a ceasefire agreement was signed between UN forces and Saddam Hussein's Iraq. Since the 1991 Gulf War ceasefire agreement, the U.S. maintained presence in the Persian Gulf since to keep an eye out of Saddam Hussein's aggression. This include the Iraqi no-fly zones enforced by U.S. and British(along with France until they withdrew from the no-fly zone patrol in 1998) aircraft patrols to protect the Kurds in northern Iraq and Shia Muslims in the south from attacks by the Iraqi Air Force, the continuing UN economic sanctions against Iraq, ongoing UN inspections of Saddam's WMDs program, and so on.Second, most of the U.S.-led Coalition agreed to a UN mission to rid Iraqi forces from Kuwait, not going onto Baghdad and remove Saddam from power. If George Bush Senior unilaterally exceeding the UN mandate to spread the war onto Baghdad and topple Saddam Hussein's regime, the coalition that he put up would have collapsed and the U.S. can be seen in the eyes of the international community as the aggressors. I don't think Bush Senior want to with that.Third, George Bush Senior also said the reason why he didn't charge onto Baghdad and take out Saddam Hussein in 1991 because of geopolitical interests in Turkey, Syria, and Iran. As he mentioned in his 1998 book, "The Worlds Transformed", if he actually take Saddam Hussein out of power in Baghdad, Iraq would have plunged into a never ending tribal civil war between warring factions, destablized the region, stregetening Iran's influence, possibly leading to a pro-Iranian Shiite government, possibly cause Iraqi Kurdistan to be destabilized, make the Kurds in Turkey demand independence and start a war there with the help of Iraqi Kurdistan, and U.S. forces would be stuck in Iraq for years in an unwinnable guerrilla warfare with thousands of lives lost and trillions were sucked out from the U.S. of rebuilding the whole country of Iraq. So Bush Senior decide to let Saddam stay in power and keep in eyes of check of factions as well as watching out of Iran. Which i think it was the best political decision ever made by the first Bush administration.Unlike George Bush Junior, he pretty much did in 2003 that meaning no coalition and went onto Iraq desipte the consequences Bush Senior made and cause the world to turn against the USA.

What was the significanceimportance of the Gulf War in 19901991?

It broke the US's 'Vietnam complex/syndrome' -where it was reluctant to use force against an enemy in their own territory for fear of embarrassing and unsustainable losses. It also shattered Saddam Hussein's ability to project his power around the middle east. By destryoing his army he was no longer able to threaten or influence his neighbours

Why did Saddam Hussein resign?

Saddam Hussein never resigned. If you read the transcripts from the criminal proceedings against him (constituted by the US-led Iraqi Authorities), Saddam Hussein repeatedly argues that as the still-reigning President of Iraq, he declares these proceedings in violation of Iraqi law. Saddam was pushed out of power by military force, but never officially resigned his presidency.

Who was the president that received a Congressional resolution of support to use military force to make Saddam Hussein comply with UN resolutions?

George Bush Senior removed Hussein's forces from Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm from January thru February 1991 (less than a 60 day military campaign). George Bush Junior invaded the capital of Iraq and removed Saddam Hussein from power during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. Both father & son presidents had congressional approval.

What real reason did George Bush have for invading Iraq?

President Bush gave Saddam Hussein an ultimatum: Either provide definitive proof of disposal of weapons of mass destruction, or else resign as leader (dictator) of the country. He did neither. Accordingly, Congress authorized the use of force should Hussein not comply. Virtually every congressman and other high ranking official in America and indeed throughout the world thought that Hussein still had WMDs. Hussein's downfall stopped the official tyranny in Iraq. Unfortunately terrorists still are causing widespread mayhem, not only in Iraq, but throughout the world.

How did the US use military force during the Reagan and Bush administrations and did military actions achieve the expected goals?

OK to keep this semi short. Saddam Hussein invaded the oil rich kingdom of Kuwait and attacks neighboring Saudi Arabia. The U.S is low on oil and Saudi Arabia is an ally so Bush uses all the weaponry Reagan had designed and stockpiled so we kicked Saddam's army back were they came from using high tech stealth bombers, M1A Abrams and other high tech weapons. Yes i do think we achieved our goal of securing Saudi Arabia and Kuwait from Saddam Hussein.

Why did Saddam Hussein attack the Kurds?

Saddam Hussein, strapped for cash due to his eight-year war in Iran on behalf of the U.S., decided to regain Kuwait as a means of increasing his income. Kuwait had been carved out of southern Iraq by British troops. When asked her thoughts on this move, U.S. Ambassador April Glaspie replied that the U.S. government had "no opinion" and that the matter of Kuwait was not associated with North America. But when he moved his troops into Kuwait, President George H.W. Bush mobilized a United Nations force against him, backed by a U.S. $4 billion secret fund provided by his business associates in Saudi Arabia.Answer1. misreading position of US Before the invasion of Kuwait, Saddam Hussein had met with the American ambassador to discuss the problems Iraq had with Kuwait. From the meeting, Saddam Hussein believed that the Americans were sympathetic to Iraq's situation and were not likely to go to Kuwait's aid. this might have encouraged the Iraqi leader to think that he would not face severe consequences.2. Saddam Hussein's leadershipSaddam Hussein, a Sunni Muslim, had always seen himself as a great leader of the Arab world. In his eyes, Kuwait's repeated refusals to give in to Iraqi demands were seen as defiance and a personal attack on him.Saddam Hussein was also worried that there would be an uprising in Iraq against him, especially by the Shi'a Muslims, who formed the majority in Iraq. the Iran-Iraq war had left the Iraqi economy and country devastated. Although Saddam Hussein claimed that the war with Iran had been a success, it did not appear to his people. prices of basic necessities were extremely high and the people were unhappy with him. moreover, the Iraqi government had built up a large army numbering a million personnel during the war. Saddam Hussein feared that the Iraqi army would turn against him if the situation in Iraq did not improve. He is person who is filled with ambitions and would not like others to defy against him. he wants everyone to do at his bidding. to prevent defiance, Hussein had to be very firm.3. Iraq's official reason4. worsening relationshipAfter Saddam ended his war with Iran, Iraq was in debt. Many accusations were thrown at Kuwait, 1st it was Kuwait was stealing oil from Iraq (Kuwait is an oil rich country) after that, Saddam claimed that Kuwait is a part of Iraq. That's when he cowardly invaded a small neighbor, and was forced out of Kuwait at Feb 26 1991 where his so called brave soldiers were running away back to Iraq.To get access to oil and control more land and power
