When Sherman had finished with Georgia, he punished South Carolina heavily for starting the war, burning down the capital Columbia.

They were the first state to secede, and they paid a heavy price for this later when Sherman punished them hard for having started the war.

South Carolina seceded because of the president election. South Carolina was a southern state, and when Abraham Lincoln became president the South thought that slavery (BLACK PEOPLE) would be abolished. Sense Slavery was the southerners way to get money, they left the Union. South Carolina was the first state to secede.
