Tecumseh, a Shawnee chief, knew that the expansion of the white man into Indian territory had to be stopped for the Indians to survive. They could only survive by banding together. Further, no one talks about the fact that many people who entered this frontier at that time had little or no regard for treaties made by a US government too weak to truly protect them from Indians, and a government where those involved in trade didn't want to see the Mississippi and Ohio rivers opened to trade with foreign countries because that would undermine their own monopoly on trade.Further, the people who first moved west were mostly desperate and poor"illegal" immigrants.

Tecumseh was a Shawnee tribe leader, that sided with the British , and battled against the Americans that were trying to invade Tecumseh's land. He battled along side general Isaac Brock with Tecumseh's army of 2000 men. Tecumseh's army was the largest aboriginal army the great lakes had ever seen. While the British panicked and retreated in the battle of Thames river, Tecumseh and his followers battled on furiously even though they were hopelessly out numbered. Tecumseh died on the battle field in the battle of Thames river with many of his men on October 5th 1813.
