The U.S. continued to stay an isolationist country because they felt like they shouldn't get involved in other countries business because that's the same reason why they went into WW1.
At the beginning of World War I, the US assumed an isolationist policy which basically means that we refused to get involved. While remaining isolationist, the US tried to get the other countries involved to declare peace.
Americans wanted to withdraw into an isolationist position.
The Japanese attacked the US Naval Fleet and Army Air Base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7th, 1941 without provocation by the USA. The US Congress declared war on Japan the next day. The Americans gave up their isolationist viewpoints that day. They were further incensed when Adolf Hitler declared war against the US. They would no longer hold on to the isolationist viewpoint when their country had been threatened by two different nations.
The US had nothing to do with appeasement. After the horrors of World War I, the US entered a period of isolationist policy, where it mostly chose to stay out of foreign problems. Additionally, the Great Depression started in 1929 and was still on-going when appeasement started in the mid-1930s. So the US had its own problems to deal with, and had no interest in getting involved in European quarrels.
The US wanted to remain in isolation because President Wilson thought that the European issues should stay within the European countries. Wilson figured that if the countries dealt with their own issues then a world war wouldn't happen. Unfortunately, President Wilson couldn't keep the US out of the European issues.
To stay out of European affairs.
Isolationist
The American public did not approve of US participation in the war because of the country's isolationist history.
As long as you pay taxes and still have "ties with US" as proof of your intention to return to US and to continue to be a US citizen, its not a problem if you stay outside US.
Since the beginning of the country, there have always been those who believed the nation should stay out of the affairs of others. One famous isolationist was the great flyer, Charles Lindbergh. They generally believe that the US should exist only for the benefit of its own citizens.
An Isolationist believes in Country first. No military going to other countries to "protect" or be involved in. No government monies going to other countries head governments. Isolationists believe in a productive industry within its borders that supports employment which then produces what is needed for the country and it's citizens. Everybody is a winner in an Isolationist country. History notes that we were Isolationists before FDR declared war on Japan. He did that to get us out of the mind thought of it for his own progressive purposes.

The US stopped pursuing an isolationist foreign policy after it was dragged into World War 2 and found itself a major power.
