It was mostly the earlobe, and though i thought it was to prove a point of passion to Paul Gauguin, or perhaps to the prostitute in the story, there now seem to be new theories that actually Gauguin sliced it off in an argument with his Fencing sword, and that Vincent hushed up the truth to keep Gauguin out of trouble with the police, possibly in the hope he would stay and form the southern school.

That would be Vincent Van Gogh, according to legend. However, there is no evidence that he actually cut his own ear off. In fact, in recent times there is new historic evidence that suggests that it was cut off in an argument by a French artist called Paul Gauguin. See related link for the historian's new account.
Vincent got very mad after a fight with gauguin his friend then , Vincent cut off lower left of his ear . this happened on Christmas eve 1888.
