Nixon was concerned about leaks in his administration so he sent a group of men into the Watergate building where the Democratic headquarters were. The burglars were caught by a security guard who noticed a piece of masking tape on the door jam. Eventually with help from an informant reporters Woodward and Bernstein were able to prove Nixon was involved. He had taped all of his conversations in the Oval Office with the burglars. The tapes were uncovered and they showed exactly that Nixon had broken the law. He quit rather than being impeached.
